Espresso Tonic: The coffee drink that has been causing a stir since the start of summer.

If you’re looking for a refreshing, modern, and unique way to enjoy your coffee, the Espresso Tonic is the perfect choice. This combination of coffee’s bitterness and the bubbly freshness of tonic water has become the biggest hit in specialty coffee shops this year. And making it at home is ridiculously easy!

Ingredients:

1 shot of freshly brewed espresso (about 30–40 ml), you can use a pod machine or a super-automatic one.

1 can of high-quality tonic water.

Plenty of ice cubes.

Optional: A slice of lemon or lime, or a sprig of rosemary for garnish.

Step-by-step preparation:

(The trick for the two-layer look!):

Chill the glass: Fill a tall glass to the brim with ice cubes.

Pour the tonic: Fill the glass with tonic water, leaving about two fingers' width of space at the top. If you like, add the lemon slice at this stage.

The big trick:

Brew your espresso separately. To ensure the coffee floats on top rather than mixing immediately, pour the espresso very slowly, letting it drip directly onto one of the top ice cubes or pouring it over the back of a spoon.

All set! You’ll see the coffee floating in a dark layer on top, with the clear tonic water beneath. It’s perfect for snapping a photo before you stir and drink it.
